Puddling or Puddle clay has been specially treated so that all air bubbles are removed, it creates a perfectly water and airtight seal, this makes it perfect for the lining of ponds, waterways, reservoirs as well as in the use of flood defences.

Soil Hill Quarries has been owned by the Greenwood family since the late 1940's, originally started by Donald Greenwood the company has been passed down and is currently owned by Warren Greenwood. The area that the quarry is based in is renown for it's high quality Shale Clay, White Clay, Puddling Clay and Engineering Clays.

Puddling is a process which lines any channel or waterway with puddling clay, this creates a watertight, strong clay base. Puddling clay as a long and rich history, originally it was used on canal systems throughout Britain and further afield, today it is still used for the same purpose as well as being used for reservoirs and as core for earth filled dams.

Currently there is permission for the site to continue mineral extraction and tipping consent until 2042, the clays extracted from this site are used all across Yorkshire as flood defences and the quarry is an important producer.

We are extremely proud of the clay we provide, it is among the best quality in the region and permeability tests have shown very high yields, this means our clients are able to reduce the amount of clay needed on site.
